Beyond the Brain: Frontiers in Consciousness and Healing
Since our inaugural Beyond the Brain meeting in August 1995, the pace in consciousness studies has, if anything, quickened. The Journal of Consciousness Studies is now well established and there are meetings being held in every continent. The largest scale meeting in Tucson in April 1996 featured around 50 keynote addresses and over 500 posters! Some of the topics considered ventured into the transpersonal arena, but these were far outnumbered by more conventional presentations from physics, biology, psychology, artificial intelligence and neuroscience.
At our last meeting we drew on a variety of disciplines to propose epistemological models going beyond the brain, thus challenging orthodoxies underpinned by various forms of materialism which all insist that consciousness is actually caused by brain processes. Materialist models are unable to accommodate phenomena suggesting that aspects of consciousness transcend space and time, let alone the possibility of survival of bodily death. They are therefore inadequate and will need to be replaced by models which do address the multiple layers and facets of human experience. The agenda of this conference is to explore approaches consistent with current scientific findings but which account for the kind of evidence largely ignored by the mainstream.
This year we are placing a particular emphasis on consciousness
and healing as we feel that medical models are due for an overhaul
if they are to include the creative interaction of consciousness
and body suggested by the mounting evidence from mind-body medicine.
Together they will specifically address such themes as:
We have invited a pioneering group of world-class speakers to share their ideas with us and put forward new and more comprehensive frameworks of understanding. In response to feedback from last year we have not offered any parallel sessions, so that you will get the chance to hear all the speakers and will not have to make agonising choices! There will be plenty of time for informal exchange over meals and drinks where you will be able to exchange ideas with other participants. There will also be an opportunity for poster sessions.
The Venue

The conference will take place at St. John's College, Cambridge, which was founded in 1511. Set in one of the most beautiful sites in Cambridge, the college offers an atmosphere of serenity that belies its central location among the city's shops, museums and restaurants. The renowned Bridge of Sighs leads from the 16th and 17th century courts to the 19th century Gothic New Court, which stands at the end of an expanse of grass and trees along the River Cam, known for centuries as ëThe Backs' We look forward to you joining us!
Lodging
Residential accommodation will be available in New Court and the modern Cripps Building in the College. There is a choice of single or twinned rooms (single beds in adjoining rooms), each with a desk, reading light, wash basin, shaving point, towels, soap and tea- and coffee-making facilities. A number of single and twinned rooms have en suite facilities, otherwise bathrooms are shared between four or five delegates. Different room rates apply, as per the attached registration form. Rooms will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Non-residents are also welcome and can book in for dinner as well as lunch. Only in exceptional circumstances will it be possible not to book in for lunch and therefore pay a lesser daily attendance rate. Our last conference in August 1995 was heavily oversubscribed, so early booking is advised!

THE ORGANISERS
The Scientific and Medical Network is an informal international group consisting mainly of qualified
scientists and doctors, together with engineers, psychologists,
philosophers, therapists and other professionals. The Network
came into existence in 1973 and now has over 1,850 Members in
more than fifty countries. It questions the assumptions of contemporary
scientific and medical thinking, so often limited by exclusively
materialistic reasoning. By remaining open to intuitive and spiritual
insights, it fosters a climate in which science as a whole can
adopt a more comprehensive and sensitive approach. Anyone interested
may join the Network as an Associate Member and receive our publication
Network, while qualified professionals are welcome to join as Full Members.
The Institute of Noetic Sciences is an international non-profit organisation with over 50,000 Members.
